It was in the back of our minds when we bought our plane tickets, that maybe, just maybe we could hike a big mountain with Edmund. We spent time thinking about what would be best (read easiest for me) to hike up and then we found that the access point to that mountain made it obnoxious. So then we decided that a hike up Quandary Peak which is just outside of Breckenridge. The hike was sure to be a good journey--summit or not it would be fun (but we really wanted to summit).
One chilly chilly morning when Edmund did his normal 4am wake up I promptly fed him and then we loaded him up in the car in hopes of venturing up all 14, 265 ft. of Quandary Peak. We hit the trail at 5:30 am. He quickly fell asleep on Cory's back in the backpack carrier (thanks ma and pa). About two hours into the hike we stopped for a diaper change and some high altitude feeding and then continued onward and upward. It was colder than we expected and when the wind picked up Edmund got a little cranky. So we stopped and built a little coat cave for me to feed him in and warm him up in--once he was happy again he went back into the pack and Cory rigged up a wind protector around the pack and he was once again asleep. We were not sure if it would work or if he would last and we were contemplating just heading back. For some reason we remembered there being a false summit so we thought the part that looked like the summit was an evil false summit. Then this awesome old man told us the top was right there, a whole 200 feet up from where we were standing. So we figured if nothing else we could top out and then come back down real quick to get out of the wind.
Almost four hours after we started we made it to the top and found a nice spot out of the wind to park Edmund so we could take some pictures. It was awesome! Here is the really cool sentimental part. Quandary Peak was the first 14er I climbed (on February 17, 2002) and it was the first peak Cory and I climbed together. So now, Quandary is the first peak we have climbed as a family. Pretty sweet huh?
I was so proud to have summited and we got so many comments from what seemed like the hundreds of people we passed on the way down saying how awesome it was that we hauled a five month old up the mountain.
We made it down safely and then had some time to sit and relax and enjoy our own special moment. It is so fun to make amazing memories with Edmund--Cory and I have our memories together which are special, but it is so neat to include your own child in the memory making, I guess it makes the memories that much sweeter. I look forward to the day when Edmund can hike Quandary with us on his own.
Here are some pictures to help you get a better picture of our adventure

cool fact: the real pointy peak way off to the left is where Cory asked me to marry him
